Amazon.com What chills, what thrills! While the Three Stooges' best days were behind them, these 22 slaphappy shorts produced between 1952 and 1954 demonstrate that the enduring comedy team still had a lot of hair-pulling, eye-gouging, and head-banging life in them yet. You can be forgiven a certain amount of déjà vu when watching some of the shorts. Studio budget cuts necessitated the use of recycled footage. "Booty and the Beast," for one, contains Curly's now-poignant cameo in "Hold That Lion." Still other shorts recycled plots from the team's Curly days ("A Missed Fortune" is a remake of "Healthy, Wealthy and Dumb"). While none of these shorts rank in the Stooges pantheon or are likely to change anyone's anti-Shemp bias (can't we all just get along?), they are knockabout fun for die-hard fans. The highlights of this set are "Spooks!" and "Pardon My Backfire," the team's pioneering forays into 3-D (two pairs of glasses are included). An engagement anniversary cake, water, fire, and hypodermic needle comin' at ya are crude but effective. Other shorts offer sublimely surreal silliness. In "Cuckoo on a Choo Choo," a T-shirted Larry storms around like a Marlon Brando wannabe, while a soused Shemp hallucinates a giant canary. The vaudeville tradition lives on in "Tricky Dicks," with god-awful gags (the old "wooden leg named Smith" bit) and bizarre dialogue ("How dare you look like someone I hate," a woman greets Larry). The political satire "Three Dark Horses" is a fine example of the classic Stooges formula, in which villains seek three patsies "who are too dumb to think and will do what we tell them. Now where do we find such guys?" Enter the Stooges. But others, like "He Cooked His Goose," break convention by presenting Moe, Larry, and Shemp as individuals rather than a team. While the Stooges themselves may be showing their ages, the slapstick, expertly timed and exquisitely choreographed, never gets old. --Donald Liebenson

Stooges Fans Ripped Off Again November 23, 2009 sm (Pennsylvania) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
At some point during the production of this long-awaited chronological compilation of Three Stooges shorts, Sony simply abandoned the quality and intent of the project with which it had started. About halfway through the series the remastering achieved on the early editions was forsaken, but why ...? Had the restoration been handed over to another production facility which was only concerned with transfering the old films to DVD; or was there a budgetary consideration that had to be made?
As noted by other reviewers, there is a problem here with those widescreen editions which have cropped the picture to the point of being bothersome. In response to this -- who made such a poor decision after reviewing the results and then deciding to stick with the matted format, as opposed to the original format which preserved all of the picture?
And the 3D extras are so poorly assembled as to be unwatchable. But what I have found to be most disturbing is a problem that creeps up in nearly every short from the last of the Curly films to the present, which is the sudden degradation of video quality of one or two shots per short which you can see are cropped and which then expand in an instant to a much higher resolution. This cannot be how these scenes were filmed, but are errors in the digital rendering that have been overlooked in the final version.
And in the short "Income Tax Sappy" there had been digital errors in the audio from previous versions released on tape, which still remain, such as Moe mouthing "a double-crossing rat" in a scene where it is clearly visible that he is not speaking the line, but which is a digital audio artifact somehow present from an earlier scene.
Yes, it seems that we almost have every Stooge film -- as we always wanted, but what a shame that the transfers have deteriorated so badly throughout.
3D leaves a lot to be desired November 19, 2009 A. Craft 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I concur with those who have posted complaining about the quality of the 3D episodes. It is painful to watch these two episodes. I'm curious about the postings that give positive assessments of the 3D episodes. These folks are seeing a clear and focused image? If so, could some of the sets be defective? I have a fairly new 42 inch 1080p TV and the 3D episodes look pathetic on it and I can't blame my TV.
Love Those Knuckleheads! November 17, 2009 J. Moore (Jonesville, NC USA) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Many more of my favorite Stooges comedies are included here. All of them look great! My personal favorite Shemp Stooges comedies are Bubble Trouble & Loose Loot. These are remakes of earlier Stooges shorts which had become more frequent by the early 1950's because of Columia Pictures budget cuts. But it's seldom that remade movies are better than the originals. Three cheers to Sony Home Entertainment for putting out the Three Stooges in these dvd sets. I hope they will release the Stooges comedies with Joe Besser too. Those final Stooges shorts are regarded by fans & critics as the worst Stooges films ever. Still I have a couple of favorites with Joe Besser including A Merry Mix Up. I haven't seen this since it was shown on cable tv years ago. I hope it will be out on dvd before long. It just wouldn't seem fair not to release the Besser Stooges comedies too.
Wide screen cropping ruins these films. 3D is really crummy. November 16, 2009 L. Bachrach 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
Set 1 through 6 of the "collection series" had the best possible picture and sound quality. These were lovingly restored. They did the stooges justice.
Disk 2 of this set falls flat. The cropping to convert these shorts to widescreen was done by someone who had no sense of composition. The heads and feet are chopped off. The Stooge were great physical comics. Those details are critical. The earlier DVD releases of these films from 1953=54 are better.
Also, the 3D is lousy. Really lousy. Unwatchable.
ANOTHER SERVING OF "STOOGE" DELIGHT! November 14, 2009 THE CRITIC (Windsor, Ontario Canada) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
The 22 digitally restored & remastered shorts created from 1952-1954 presented in the "Three Stooges Collection Volume 7" is further proof that Moe, Larry and Shemp were still as funny as ever in 52-54; and despite cutbacks at Columbia Pictures fans wouldn't get anything but their absolute best. Because Columbia Pictures decided to cut back on their budget the Stooges had to recycle some of the stock footage from earlier shorts and rename some of them as well.
The fantastic Three Stooges shorts found in Volume 7 are finally being presented on DVD as they were originally shown in Movie theaters; some in widescreen for the first time since their original release and as a fan I'm happy the widescreen shorts were included in this set. Sony Pictures has also done something wonderful by including 2-D versions of "Spooks" and "Pardon my Backfire" in this set as well as the 3-D versions and the 3-D glasses to view them with.
Sony Studios have to be commended once again for finally listening to the fans after all the years of inferior shorts and devoting precious time and meticulous care into the restoration of the 22 incredible stooge shorts found in Volume 7 and the entire remastered "Stooges" collection to date. The 22 digitally remastered & restored video transfers found in volume seven are simply amazing to say the least.
No longer do these magnificent shorts look like they were made over 50 years ago. Sony Pictures has given fans exactly what we've always wanted; the best picture & sound possible. The newly restored picture is pristine & the remastered soundtrack is perfect. All 22 shorts from 1952-1954 are presented on two single sided discs and packaged in slim cases. The disc artwork and packaging is fantastic to say the least, making this set even more attractive and highly collectible for any Stooge fan to own. The 22 newly restored & remastered shorts from Sony Pictures are once again presented in chronological order completely uncut, politically incorrect and presented in Beautiful Black & White. Hip Hip Hooray!
