Amazon.com Product Description Weighing in at less than 12 ounces and measuring just 11 inches wide, the Pentax DSmobile lets you carry around all you need to scan everything from a business card to an 8.5 by 14 inch document. The scanner draws power from its USB interface so no clunky AC adapter is needed. Bring it along with you and you can instantly transmit a printed page via email, fax, or the web. The scanner has a hardware optical resolution of 300 dpi and the included OCR software automatically converts the document to editable text. The scanner uses a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) to achieve its smaller volume and lighter weight, and also requires less power consumption and lower maintenance than a traditional CCD. The DSmobile has few moving parts, which promotes high reliability and nearly maintenance-free operation. It consumes only 0.2 watt of power in standby mode and a maximum of 2.2 watts of power when scanning. The Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner is compatible with Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. It is backed by a 1-year warranty. What's in the Box DSmobile 600 scanner, leather case, 35-inch USB cable, user's manual, instllation guide, software CD, calibration card, and two 5x7-inch photo-scan sleeves.
Product Description This powerful, compact, lightweight 600-dpi color scanner is combined with dynamic software to provide exceptional quality scanning and easy management of documents and photos. The DSmobile 600 is a direct replacement for the DSmobile USB but provides higher resolution, high-speed USB 2.0 interface, and additional software that will enhance and simplify your scanning needs.

Truckdriver on the road November 24, 2009 Gary E. Rowlett (Milner, GA. USA) I bought this scanner about Aug 2009 to use in truck to email my delivery invoices for payment.
I have a labtop it connects to, for scanning and email. I am not really a tech guy. However I have found this
easy to install on laptop and oh so easy to use. And at $3.00 a page to fax in my invoices from truck stops.
I have saved its cost, just on fax charges I didn't have to pay. I email my invoices from most delivery locations,
so I get paid for the load faster. the scans go to your document file and you just sent as attachment to email.
The unit is very small and easy to store, comes with a cover that slides over it.
This Pentax DS mobile 600 has worked very very well for me. If you need easy of use and a compact unit this is it.
10 and counting November 5, 2009 Combiemom (Auburn, CA) We are a small services oriented business that has remote employees. We've equipped those employees including some of our in house employees with the Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner. Our remote employees scan completed work orders from their laptops using the Pentax Scanner while in their trucks. They love the ease of use, portability and dependability of the scanner. Before the remote employees would have to go to somewhere to fax in their paperwork at the end of the day. Additionally, the in house employees are now able to scan and email the remote employees maps, work orders, etc immediately to help them out. We're ready to order our 11th one. Not one problem with the other 10 in use!
Great scanner, slightly difficult feed November 3, 2009 Kevin V. Jensen (St. George, UT) I purchased the Pentax DSMobile600 scanner to scan multi-page documents, some as pressure paper copies, into my laptop, running Windows Vista Professional, and it works well. The small size and light weight make it fit easily into my computer bag. Black and white scanned images are very sharp; contrast and brightness can be adjusted to scan even the faintest of copies (most of my scans are black and white, so I can't attest to color properties). Scanning speed is great for a mobile scanner; the the software's ability to scan into several formats is a great plus.
The only problem that I have with this scanner is that the documents have to be precisely positioned for accurate feed. Documents often get hung up on a small lip created by the union of the upper and lower plastic parts in the feed slot, slowing the process of scanning. Otherwise, this is a great scanner.
Great scanner, at least while it lasts. October 31, 2009 Patrick Burton (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
On the positive side:
The Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner is flexible, fairly fast for its size, compact enough for a book-bag or laptop bag, and is super easy to use.
Speed:
I used this scanner in school while we got papers passed out. As the teacher was passing out, let's say a 15 page packet, I would almost be done scanning the packet before she was done. I could scan a normal sized paper or a larger size.
Simplicity:
The installation is easy, and the scanner is compatible with programs such as Acrobat, Paint, and Photoshop Elements. The button on top provides an easier way to initiate the scan. I haven't tried using the button on Windows XP, but on Vista and Windows 7 it pulls up a menu to select the program of your choice to scan.
Flexibility:
I have tested and it seems to work fine on Windows XP Professional 32bit, Windows Vista 64bit Home Premium and Windows 7 64bit both RC(release candidate) and RTM on Ultimate version. The drivers for 64 bit Vista are available online at their site, or are given on the CD with the package. Although it doesn't say on the website, the scanner does operate on Windows 7.
Cons:
The only cons I can think of is the interface for browsing where to save the file once scanned is kind of a hassle. One thing is when you choose what file type to save it as (either a jpg, pdf or tiff) if you don't put the file extension (ie: *pdf) at the end of the file name it won't save it as a .pdf. For example if the document I'm saving it as is "a summary on a scanner.pdf" but I just type in "a summary on a scanner" it will simply save it as just a file. However on a positive note this can be easily fixed by browsing to where you saved and renaming the file with the respective extension. I do wish there was an option to scan continuously until the paper is no longer detected - let's say you have a super long page.
The product, does not (at least it didn't for me, it may for you or someone else) operate past a month. I have sent the scanner back once and am now sending the second scanner back again, this time for a refund. Overall the scanner is great, fast, and useful in a class setting or even scanning receipts or pictures, in color, grayscale or black and white, that is, while it lasts.
The story of what happened to my scanners is stated below. I am not saying this will happen to you, but this did happen to me so it may be useful in determining whether or not to buy it.
The problem that happened is it was working perfectly, but then about 20 days later, the computer stopped recognizing it. It would register as USB2.0 Scanner. I tried reinstalling the device, trying it on a different computer with a different operating system. (If you're a techie, I tried going into device manager and updating the driver, manually, automatically, and through the cd). The first one I sent back and they sent me a new one. The new one worked just as the old, so I assumed it was some hardware problem. But then the one I was just using failed - same exact problem. (The first one was installed on Windows Vista 64bit (working fine) and then on the Windows 7 RC1 64bit (working fine for a while). The second one was installed on Windows 7 RC1 64bit and then stopped working. I was going to completely reinstall my OS so I thought I'd try it after. I tested the scanner on Windows 7 64bit RTM and I still had the same problem as before. In both of these cases the computer I tested it on after the scanner didn't work was Windows XP Professional 32bit.
Easier set up on Mac than on Windows. October 21, 2009 Skyhawk (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Easier set up on Mac than on Windows.
The fact that there are no printed instructions complicates installation. This requires finding the appropriate parts of the manual on the CD and printing them. If you haven't printed enough material or the correct material, you have to stop the installation process and go back to the CD.
It took about 45 minutes to get the scanner working with Windows.
The CD is an old fashioned Windows only type. It's amazing that Pentax does not know how to make a CD readable by both Windows and Macs (others do). Pentax has a Mac driver on their website which installed easily.
It took about 7 minutes to get the scanner working on the Mac OS.
I purchased this scanner to take on the road. It appears well suited for that as it is small and light. The scan quality is good for the price, but not as good as what you would get with a flat bed scanner.
The lack of software (except for the TWAIN driver) is not a problem for Mac users because most Mac applications, including Preview, Image Capture, and Word all have the ability to control a scanner.
Why the two star rating?
No printed manual
Mac software not on CD
Manufactured in a Communist country.
