Product Description The Epson Perfection V500 Photo features a built-in transparency unit for positive or negative film up to medium format. It scans 12 frames of 35mm filmstrip, four frames of mounted 35mm slides or 1 frame of 6x12cm medium format film at once, ideal for preserving old family images. Four easy access buttons are located on the front of the scanner to initiate scan to application, scan to PDF, scan to email and copy. They offer a quick and easy way to scan an image without the need to access settings on the computer. The scan to PDF function allows an image or multiple pages to be scanned and automatically saved to a specified PDF file, while the scan to email button allows documents or images to be copied and sent anywhere in the world at the touch of a button. Software provided with the Perfection V500 Photo includes the new Epson Scan 3.2 and Epson Creativity Suite. Epson Scan is designed to make scanning easy with its automatic mode and home mode. The needs of the advanced user are addressed with the professional mode. Epson Scan 3.2 offers high compression multi-page PDF scanning and allows ICC profiles to be embedded into the scanned files. Colour reproduction for negative scanning delivers superior image quality in critical or mixed lighting conditions. It also offers an advanced backlight correction to improve the overall visibility in the image. Digital ICE Technology ensures dust and scratches are completely removed from colour films, creating high-quality results. Additional software includes Adobe PhotoShop Elements 4 (PC) and 3 (Mac) and ABBYY FineReader Sprint 6 Plus. An optional Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) is available for small offices that wish to use the Perfection V500 Photo for higher volumes of document scanning. Full software package - Epson Scan 3.2, Epson Creativity Suite, Digital ICE, Adobe Elements 4 (PC) and 3(Mac) and ABBYY FineReader Sprint 6 Plus Mac and PC compatible

A little pricey but worth it November 26, 2009 Larry VanDeSande (Mason, Michigan United States) When we changed computes and operating systems, our old scanner would no longer work with, first, Windows Vista Supreme, and, later, Windows 7.0. Thus we needed a new one and Epson's Perfection V500 Photo Scanner is what we selected from the relatively few desktop scanners still sold in stores (many more available online, of course!) It replaced an older generation scanner of the same name by the same manufacturer.
The biggest differences between the two (the old one and the new one) were price, functionality and speed of performance. The old one wouldn't scan negatives or slides -- this one does and it comes with plastic frames for the flatbed that help ensure you do it properly -- and our old one did not come with software to upgrade photos (this one came with Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.) It also lacked the one button options to email, print and produce a PDF this one includes.
For me, the main advantage is the speed of performance. Before, I had to give the machines several commands before it would scan to file and, even then, it was kind of slow going. This one takes one command and the scan is over in about three seconds. The challenge afterward is finding the new file in my photos, but that's not much of a search. The quality of reproduction is said to be better even if I haven't yet noticed the difference in my end products.
The price difference for these new advantages is quite different. We spent less than $100 on our old scanner and this one is about 2.5 times that cost, being the top product available in the few stores that continues to carry stand alone scanners (most stores only sell scanners built into multi-purpose fax machines-printers; thank God for Amazon, eh?)
I haven't used it enough yet or scanned and worked on negatives to determine the adequacy of that function. The other reviewers say good things about this so I have no reason to doubt them. I'd say this is a fine scanner for my purposes and probably will be for yours, too, if you need a stand alone desktop scanner. It's a Cadillac of the industry that has a lot of functions and features.
Digital ICE not working for Windows 7 November 22, 2009 L. Boling (San Diego, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So far I'm happy with the scanner after just setting it up.
However, after downloading all the software and the Adobe Elements that goes with the scanner, somehow the DIGITAL ICE feature is greyed out and not available to use. I have sent in a request to Epson. Everything else appears normal (scanning works, and even the dust feature), so I was originally thinking that this problem was because of one of my settings. However, I've clicked and unclicked everything in the professional scan mode, and nothing gives me access to DIGITAL ICE. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Just Getting Started November 22, 2009 S. Murwin (Cape May, NJ) Easy to hook up, software installed smoothly and seems like a nice sturdy unit. I like how the lid automatically "holds" in the up position so you can place photos on glass with one hand. Makes in easy to swap to the next pic when doing large amounts. So far the images look great. Been doing them at 600dpi, which is a large high quality photo. It will actually go up to 12,800dpi...I don't think that would fit in my house! So far I've scanned about 75 photos and I'm really liking it and would definitely recommend it.
Scanner November 17, 2009 Alex Rygas We did a good bit of searching various companies for price comparisons and found this to be by far the best deal. In addition this is exactly what we have been seeking. It is likely that we will purchase at least one more just like it.

Fast and Easy to Use November 16, 2009 --chris (New Jersey) After going back and forth on a number of different scanners to replace my old Scanjet 3970, I settled on this one. My requirements were:
1. Had to be fast. I've got a lot of pictures to scan in and I want to scan at decent resolution (at least 1200 DPI).
2. Had to handle negatives. I've got a lot of old negatives to scan in.
3. Had to be easy to use and "mindless". I typically scan photos and such in during the day and need to be able to drop them on the scanner and hit a single button.
This scanner has met all of those expectations.
A few minor complaints:
1. I can't find a way to specify an output directory. If there is a way it's well hidden.
2. The accessories for holding the slides and negatives seem a bit "flimsy". They haven't broken on me but I could see it happening.
3. The accessories are "loose". To use the slide scanner adapter you have to take out the regular backing for the scanner. And when you aren't using them the accessories have no storage area.
These are minor complaints, however.
Over all the speed is excellent and the picture quality outstanding. It handles negatives flawlessly and can hold up to 12 negatives on two strips at a time saving them each to different files.
