5 out of 5 stars Warning!   November 15, 2009
Melissa Riley
Do NOT purchase this product for $400. You can get both the red and black one for $200 on the Zune Originals website (plus a free engraving) or on Walmart's website.

3 out of 5 stars Overall: pretty good, but durable? Not so much.   November 8, 2009
L. Sorensen (Loveland, CO USA)
I'm not going to waste your time reviewing every single minute aspect and feature of this device. I will say I got my 80gb Zune 2 years ago and it's done pretty much everything I have needed it to. I consider myself a bit of music enthusiast, and the main thing I use it for is having my music available at the touch of a button wherever I go and plenty of room to add more as my collection constantly expands. Of course it has a million other features too, some of which I use and some I don't. I still occasionally discover a feature that I had forgotten about or never even knew about. So in many ways it far exceeds what I use it for, but I also have a few complaints. Keep in mind that there are many, many things I love about my zune, but to keep this review as concise as possible, I'm not going to go in to all of those things because it's far easier and quicker to just list the the few main things I DO NOT like about my zune. Aside from those things, I was pretty satisfied.

Here's what I regret:

1. No volume equalizer. I very much enjoy making and listening to playlists. Many of my playlists sound ridiculous because of the varying volumes from album to album.

2. No smart playlists. I've always wanted to be able to have a playlist generated for me by whatever criteria I specify.

3. Limited accessories. At least compared to ipods. My wife has an ipod touch and if she needs anything for it, there is an infinite sea of accessories for her to choose from. I am most jealous of a handy little cord which enables her to hook her ipod directly to her car stereo. As far as I know, zunes have no such thing. The closest comparable method is a device that plays your zune over your car radio but I have tryed this before and it reduces the sound quality to the extent that it's not worth it to me.

I can live without the 3 things I listed above and overall I WAS satisfied with the performance of my zune. But a fourth thing happened about month ago and it's got me seriously pissed off.

4. The buttons have stopped working. Excuse me while I rant about this for a moment. I'm assuming this happened because I use it too much. (I use it every day, sometimes all day.) This is by far my biggest complaint, because these things were obviously not built for people who actually want to use them all time. If you sell something, you should probably assume that the people who buy it are going to use it and if they want to use it a lot, it shouldn't break. I paid at least 200 bucks for this thing, and I expected it to last a lot longer than 2 years. I could be wrong about this but I think the zune warranty lasts 1 year. In any case, my warranty is expired. I was curious to see how much it would cost to mail it in for service and I discovered they charge a flat rate of $150, which, if I wanted to spend that much, I could probably buy a brand new one for on this very website. Microsoft must be making a killing selling products that break after 2 years, and then they give you the option to either buy a new one, or get your current one fixed for about the same price as buying a new one.

Writing this review has been a good venue to channel my frustrations but it provides me with little comfort since my zune is still nearly impossible to navigate and it'll be a long time before I come across enough money to get a new one. If I decide Microsoft even deserves my customer loyalty to get a new one I will definitely be looking into extending the warranty (if they offer that option) and I'd recommend you do it too.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't even last 16 months.   November 6, 2009
Angela R. Bodell (Idaho)
I got the zune 80gb for my birthday last year from my husband. At first I loved it...I played in my car, at work, and at home. But the battery died within a year and it was not easy to change. THey weld the battery into the device. A changeable battery would be a wonderful idea. Then after we replaced the battery ourselves the zune started to freeze. I had to reset it and lost all of my songs. 2100 plus songs. THen it totally went black and nothing works. Now I am looking for a new mp3 player that is NOT a zune. ANd if it is past warranty, microsoft wants to charge over a hunder dollars to look at it.

5 out of 5 stars Zune Review   November 1, 2009
Joseph K. Dominic
I was looking for a dedicated media player as my phone was not up to the task. It worked but well enough but its hard to be a jack of all trades and since I was approaching my storage limit 8gb it was time to find a better solution.

The 2 main players in this market are the Zune and the Pod (classic) and I have had a chance to play with more than one Ipod I have found them to be a nice device but I have never seen anyone with a Zune so it made the choice a little harder.

From all my searching the reviews and comparisons ect both models do the same thing in essentially the same way. One is better at this and the other is better at that and so on. The accessories all cost about the same but the Pod has a better support in that area by far. Stuff for the Zune is available but usually has to be ordered online. Sometimes it is deeply discounted which is very nice (plus to the Zune. This was not much of a deciding factor to me as I order almost everything online.

What it came down to in the end was the software. I downloaded the latest and greatest versions of each Itunes and Zune and played with them. I liked the MS Zune software better. I just liked the overall feel of it.

The Zune has had a long battery life and since I installed a cradle in my car with a charger its never an issue. The headphones are comfortable and I usually have an issue with ear buds but these are nice even for longer use. I normally have an over the ear set or I use Bose quiet comfort headphones in the house and the sound quality is spectacular.

My Car radio has an AUX input so I rarely use the FM transmitter with the cradle but the Zune has a great signal and its been very clear when I have used it.

I like the feel of the Zune over the Ipod and I like the look. (it lives is a a H/D Rubberized Speck Case so I never see it)

I haven't use the Zune store yet and still have a free 14 day pass to check it out with but thats another review.

Overall, its a great product and I would definitely recommend it and more importantly I would buy another.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing player but not durable to common drops and uses.   October 15, 2009
Vera A. Welker (Lancaster, Ohio USA)
I have had two zunes so far. I got the vary first one which i loved but then cracked the screen on after dropping it i only had the old one for about 6 months. Then for Christmas that same year i got a 80gb zune i loved it even more than the white one and i liked the look of it. But just recently i dropped it in a acrylic case that i thought would protect it which it did the outside the case and the outside are just fine. But the zune does not project anything on the screen even though it still lights up and the lcd is not cracked. Good mp3 player but it is not durable to drops and rough use. I am going to apple next to try them out if that does not work maybe the zune HD.
