The Advanced Z-Lid lets you produce clear, complete scans of thick originals such as notebooks. Built-in FARE™ 3.0 retouching technology helps to enhance your final images, even correcting for dust, scratches and backlighting on photos. And to reduce "cable clutter", one simple cable provides power and a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection.

Done in 14 Seconds
Now, scanning is faster than ever. In about 14 seconds, you can scan a letter-size color original such as an article, or a page from your notebook or textbook.

Shadow-Free Scans
Typically, when you scan a page from a book, the shadow from the book’s inside "gutter" shows up on the scan. No more. Gutter Shadow Correction eliminates that shadow, providing a clean scan of just the page — and not the gutter.

4 EZ Buttons
How simple is this? Just press a button to select what you want to do with your original — copy it (sending a scanned image to your printer), scan and save it, produce a PDF, or create an email

Smart Scanning
Whether you’re scanning a photo, document, business card, textbook or personal notebook, the new Auto Scan Mode automatically recognizes the type of original, crops it to proper size and then scans and saves your file in the appropriate format. Perform this and more with the press of a single button.

Just One Wire
To reduce the number of wires in your work area, one simple cable provides power and a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connection.

4 out of 5 stars Canon Scanner   November 27, 2009
L. Ullman (Ohio)
This is a good scanner after the installation problems were resolved. The instructions for installation were inadequate necessitating several phone calls. The first scanner I received was defective but Canon sent a replacement unit immediately.

4 out of 5 stars Good scans, intuitive to use, with moderate speed   November 25, 2009
Debbie Lee Wesselmann (the Lehigh Valley, PA)
Although the Canon LiDE 200 is not the fastest scanner around, it provides a good option for the budget-conscious consumer; for Mac users with Snow Leopard, it works right out of the box, and Windows/older OS X users need only to install from the CD. The scanner attaches to the computer via USB cable and requires no outside power to run. It is simple, sleek, and relatively sturdy.

Like many budget scanners, the Canon takes a while to warm up between scans, a process that takes less than a minute but which can still be annoying if you want to scan many documents. The scans themselves are fairly quick. But the best feature of the LiDE is the ability for the scanner to determine separate documents on the flat bed surface, allowing users to "warm up" once and perform, say, four different scans with one push of a button. (This feature seems to be the default, although the preferences can be changed to scan everything as a single document.) The scanner never failed to detect the boundaries between photographs. All photos I scanned were of good enough quality to enlarge and use in a print project. As with all scanners, it's important to keep the flat bed clean and free of dust and fingerprints to achieve the best results.

I recommend the Canon for anyone who needs a scanner for light or moderate use. If you plan to scan a lot, you might be better off investing in a faster model.

4 out of 5 stars Canon LiDE 200 scanner   November 20, 2009
Country Squire (Azle, Texas)
I purchased this scanner to digitize 3 1/2" by 5" photos, and needed something powered by a USB port on my laptop. I have about 20,000 photos to scan, and using my Epson photo scanner, one photo at a time, was taking too long.

This scanner cannot scan negatives or slides, but does an adequate job on prints. By scanning 4 photos at a time, my work goes much faster - it is NOT 4 times as fast as scanning individual photos, but is probably about twice as fast.

Scanning these photos at 300 dpi is sufficient; scans at higher resolution wouldn't add to the quality of the digitized files.

The scanner is light weight, and easily transportable. It is quiet and relatively fast. I consider it a good instrument for quickly scanning 3 1/2 by 5-inch photos, and I highly recommend it for that purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Scan and Copy in Color or B/W   November 18, 2009

Purchased the Canon image scanner at Amazon.com. Best price available. No problems, works smoothly, easy to set up.

2 out of 5 stars Does not support 4800dpi optical   November 16, 2009

I ordered this scanner primarily for the claimed optical scanning resolution of 4800dpi, but it doesn't actually support it. The scanner driver only allows you to select up to 1200dpi from a drop-down menu (I tried both the driver that came with it on CD as well as from their website). It allows you to type in a much higher dpi, but comparing the resulting scan with a copy of the scan shrunk to 25% and scaled back up 400% in software shows no difference in detail levels. Even the edges of physical objects on the scanner bed are heavily blurred at anything above 1200dpi. I contacted Canon with my concerns, the first rep replied to a question I didn't ask and was completely unrelated to my problem. I replied, again outlining my problem and what tests I had done so far. I received the automated "Thank you for your e-mail inquiry. Your message has been received." within minutes. It has been a week now with no actual response.

In terms of a generic scanner, it's not too bad. Reasonable color depth, reasonably quick scans, only having to deal with one cable is a definite plus, scans at 1200dpi look ok. Unfortunately, I bought it for scanning things at higher resolutions, and for that it is worthless. Support channels were pretty much useless as well.
