Not as great as portrayed!! November 27, 2009 The reviewer (NC) First let me start off by saying that this is a replacement for my Navigon 7200T. I am only replacing my 7200T because Navigon doesn't seem to be honoring their agreement to finish providing Freshmaps. A GPS without support and updates is dead. I will be comparing the Garmin 765T with the Magellan 4700 and 7200T. First let me start off by saying that I'm only giving this device 4 stars for one reason. Other than that, I feel it is more of a 2 1/2 to 3 stars.
Pros:
The reason for 4 stars is that it came with an updated map and received an updated map. This is an A+ for Garmin. Neither the 7200T nor 4700 came with updated maps. Garmin offers lifetime mapdates for one fee for the life of the 765T, this is another A+ for Garmin. Magellan offers 1 update a year by purchasing a SD card for $79 plus (S&H) I would imagine. Navigon OFFERED 12 updates in 3 years for $80 if I remember correctly. The bluetooth feature is good on both the 765T and 7200T, unlike the 4700 where it is hard to hear. The 765T does display the very small speed limit, unlike the 4700. The 7200T has a better speed limit display. The traffic works on all the units, but GPS companies cannot be blamed for traffic information as it with the Transit Authority to make sure traffic updates are acurate. The 765T and 7200T come with their receivers, where you have to purchase the traffic link for the 4700. I do feel Garmin's features are easy to use. If you want to put in the information, there is the fuel tracker report.
Cons:
Now I don't know who said that Garmin's routes are the best, but that has not been the case with me. The Garmin seems to want to route me through business routes or downtowns, when there are by-passes or interstates nearby. I think 7200T and 4700 have better routing. For anyone who has used a GPS with reality view, I have yet to experience Garmin's junction view. Unlike the 7200T and 4700, the Garmin will assume you know how to stay on a current road or interstate until it's time to exit. I think reality/junction view is important because some people are better navigators than others. It is better to be safe than sorry when guiding people on unfamilar roads. The 7200T and 4700's junction view will come on at most major intersections or interchanges. Text to speech was made to keep your eyes on the road and not the GPS. Garmin could use some work on giving directions. Some people may be annoyed by text to speech, but it is meant to be your guide without looking at the screen. Garmin's screen is cartoonish and looses detail at speeds above 50mph. Only major roads will show until you slowdown or stop. Also, its hard to judge roads on the Garmin due to the zooming out, unlike the 7200T and 4700. The Garmin doesn't give you alot of options. You will get your speed and another choice on what to display. The 7200T is the best in this area as you can display several different items, unlike the 4700 and 765T. The Garmin's screen is not sensitive.
Conclusion:
If Garmin expands their text to speech and updates their routing software, then this will be a good GPS. If you have trouble reading small words, then this is not the GPS for you. It seems Garmin and Magellan won't be leaving the US market, unlike Navigon.
Disappointing November 26, 2009 Douglas Schifter (Thornhurst, Pa. USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I Purchased this unit to replace my 2 year old Garmin Nuvi 650 due to the new features listed. I am a professional driver who operates in the New York Metro area and drive about 1500-2000 miles per week. GPS is a great technology for me in my daily routine. I bought the 765t model for the Bluetooth and a few other developments that seemed to be desireable. The Bluetooth microphone apparently is poor as everyone I spoke to on it complained to me about the audio quality. I drive a large lincoln and keep my seat back so there may be more distance in inches for the sound to travel but not much. If this contributed to the poor quality, I do not know. I only know I had difficulty understanding those talking to me when I was next to a truck on the highway or when I was speaking to them always. My second complaint is with the touchscreen buttons for entering addresses. I use them while moving just as I do with the Nuvi 650 but the buttons are smaller I think as I am frequently mistyping which never happens with the 650 model. On this model when you enter the wrong security code you must remove then reattach the unit in order to reenter the code or drive to your special location (usually home)which is about 120 miles away for me in Pa. The nice graphics displaying the interstate split with a broad arrow for the proper lane is not the usual display that you see. In fact it is a fairly unusually seen graphic. You get in the upper left corner the proper lane indicator which works well.
The traffic service has not improved much in two years and is pretty much useless. I was disappointed sitting on a massively backed up I-95 doing 3 mph and the traffic was not listed at all. They have improved the way they display surrounding areas with traffic warnings so you can route yourself ( if you are familiar with the area) with alternatives but the reports of traffic are completely unreliable as to accuracy anyway so this model should not be purchased for the lifetime of traffic reports for free. You can throw a dart and get equal or better results. See my first review of the traffic antenna from 2 years ago. I paid 180 for the antenna and service which was inaccurate then as it is today. They use NAVTEC for the service. If there are other better sources, I have not used them yet and this review does not apply to other traffic reporting services accuracy. NAVTEC is the pits. I don't think this model is worth the price and suggest you look elsewhere if you are looking to upgrade. If you need your first GPS unit this will suffice but be aware of the shortcomings of the Bluetooth hookup and if you have large fingers as I do the problem with hitting a wrong key on the touchscreen.
Nice GPS November 24, 2009 C. Crowder (Madison NJ) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
After reading extensive reviews on the internet for about a week, i finally settled on the Garmin nuvi 765T. This unit incidentally was the highest rated GPS on both GPS and PC Magazines. I have never owned a GPS before and wanted one with higher end features and this Garmin seemed to fit the bill. After using this Garmin for a little over two weeks, I must say that this is as good as advertised. That being said, here are my pro's and con's on the nuvi 765T
Pro's
excellent overall design and build quality, far better than the competition
screens are bright with great resolution, very intuitive and easy to navigate
excellent update times on the mapping screens
mounting hardware, though lightweight plastic, is sturdy and reliable
NAVTEQ mapping software seems to be incredibly accurate, recognizes what road you are driving on from country lanes to interstates and everything in-between
routing engine for navigating seems to be very accurate most of the time, the route the GPS calculates is always the shortest distance
traffic information feature is excellent and very useful
other features such as lane assist and 3-D rendering are very nice
Con's
have not been able to load 2010 mapping update to the GPS
bluetooth feature does not work with LG cell phone
advertisements are necessary evil that comes with traffic feature though the pop-ups do not block mapping screens
Overall, a very nice high-end GPS from Garmin and an excellent choice for anyone in the market for a GPS device with some extra features
Watch what you receive from Amazon November 24, 2009 R. Favicchia 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I ordered a brand new 765T, even though I had the option of buying a refurbished one. What I received was even worse than a refurbished unit. It wasn't even reset back to factory settings before it was shipped out. It still had addresses, phone numbers, driving log, and Home location still in the unit!
When I wrote to Amazon about it, they replied "I apologize for this mix-up during packing, and for the fact that the Garmin nüvi 765/765T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator you received did not appear to be in new condition."
"Did not appear to be in new condition"?!?! Like I couldn't determine that it was used and broken?! It most certainly WAS NOT in new condition AND the touch screen did not work properly. The registration/calibration of the screen is unpredictable. I assume that is the reason it was originally returned. But to send it out as "NEW" and not even reset or repair it is unconscionable!
Even the replacement that I received has issues with the touch screen. I wish there was a way to calibrate the screen on your own!

My Garmin 330 which is at least five years old and doesn't have all the fancy bells and whistles, and is about five times more bulky, is spot on accurate about 98% of the time. This Garmin 765T can do everything, except, get me from point A to point B without running me around in circles. It won't allow me to download updated maps!
AND, Its only a month old, I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DOWNLOAD UPDATED MAPS!
