1 out of 5 stars awful   November 22, 2009

The worst product ever. I bought it brand new and after setting it up, kept getting ink system failure. Went to tech support on-line and tried everything they suggested. Nothing worked, spent $100 on replacement cartridges and still didn't work. Tried calling tech support and kept getting message that one of their call centers was down. Got the same message for a week. Tried on-line chat support, they told me they would send replacement parts in 2-3 days, 1 week later still haven't received them and their call center is down. I'm repacking the printer now and sending it back. I will never buy another HP product again!

5 out of 5 stars Best All-In-One for the price for Mac OS X   November 21, 2009

Replacing an Epson CX5000 because the T069 inks are just killing me. The OJ 6500 was a breeze to set up and network on 2 iMacs and a Macbook using Airport. Just hooked the printer to my router and installed the software on the Macs... easy! I have 3 Intel Macs all running Leopard 10.5.8. The included software package is full featured and capable. The Twain driver works great with Photoshop Elements 8 and the included HP Scan, and a 48 bit 1200dpi scan of a color 5x7 only took a minute and a half. The twain driver does NOT work with Image Capture though, which is really no big deal as HP Scan has a lot more options. Standard printing is high quality but photos are a little dark and blue shifted, which may be my Colorsync profile at fault. Beautiful text and graphics from Pages, Numbers, Word, Excel, NeoOffice, Adobe Reader, AppleWorks, and Printshop.

The 920 cartridges are roughly the same price as my old Epson cartridges but are rated at twice the pages. My math puts it at about .12 per page, much cheaper than the .24 per page the Epson was averaging. 20 or 30 photos would suck the Epson tanks dry. I'm hoping the HP fairs better for 8x10 prints. I'm using outside print shops for smaller prints... no home printer can compete with .15 per photo.

Also of note: The HP installer assigns the files the wrong group so fix permissions after you install.

I'd definitely recommend this printer for any dorm, home, or small office usage.

4 out of 5 stars Great Printer/Scanner for $100 (if you know what you are doing)   November 10, 2009

All I wanted is to print and scan which this does nicely. I did some quick math in the store and the ink cartridges for this model cost a tiny bit less, but had longer life than the cartridges for similar models.

My first problem, as other reviewers have said, is the drivers. I have Windows 7 64-bit, and no driver was available for it either on the CD or online! I was about to just box it up and return it, but then decided to see what drivers Windows 7 came with. I did a network printer install and it just popped up and asked if I wanted to install this HP 6500 printer that it found on my network. Just like that I was printing.

I thought I could live with that and just scan using my other Windows XP machine, but while poking around I found that the printer has a tiny web server built in with a pretty decent interface for managing print jobs and even scanning. You can scan without drivers by just opening a browser and typing in the printers IP address. Yes, it has been 7-8 years since I purchased my last home printer, so maybe everybody has this feature now, but still...I was impressed.

I'm sticking with the basic driver and using the printer's webpage for everything else. I can't stand bloated driver packages and this works just fine. I installed the IT professionals only basic driver from HP on my other XP machines as well.

Lose a star for being noisy and having crappy drivers. Otherwise a great printer!

5 out of 5 stars Great for my purposes thus far   November 9, 2009

I haven't tried setting up wireless or fax yet. I've only used it for printing a few things, but it's been perfect so far.

4 out of 5 stars Better than expected   November 7, 2009
Tony the Tiger (Sequim, WA)
I doubted the wisdom of buying this printer, but my aged Brother multi-function was dying, and it was time to replace it. Because it functioned as a fax machine, and because I'd turned major print jobs over to an inexpensive Samsung, what was important to me was scanning, faxing, and color printing. It was not rated great at these, but adequate.

The price was right the week I bought it (I paid less than $80 including tax) so I took a chance on it -- figuring that if worst came to worst, I could take my pictures to the drugstore for printing, and my scanning needs weren't too demanding.

First, as a test, I did some B&W text printing. It is somewhat better than my laser printer. That was an unexpected surprise, but a good one.

Second, I sent and received several faxes. I quickly learned that the print engine supports the highest level of quality, and, again, you get really good results. I was very satisfied.

Because I needed some copies, I tried the various copy modes. The printer defaults to intermediate quality, which is not too good, but at high quality it's excellent. It has limited options in terms of feeding different-length pages into the copier, but it will resize to copy a page to a page -- so your 8 1/2 x 14 inch legal pages will print legibly to 8 1/2 x 11 paper in your printer.

Finally, I did some color printing. Based on the other reviews, I expected something comparable to the Brother at best. To my surprise, it was much better -- very close the commercial lab quality. There was essentially no "red bleed" and skin tones were just a little off, tending slightly towards pink.

I have run at least 200 pages through the printer and it reports the Black cart as 1/3 remaining. I haven't done too much color printing, so I can't even guess how much mileage you get from them. The black cartridge comes in two sizes, the product ships with the half-size cart.

As reported elsewhere, there's a long lag to the printing (or copying) of the first page, though it's reasonably quick after that. The machine is noisier than I had anticipated.

Summary -- It's not perfect -- photo printing could be better, it could be faster on startup, and quieter. But if you need a combo unit that does everything and can be plugged directly into a router (but does not support wi-fi)
this is an extremely good unit for the price.

Please Note -- I downloaded drivers from the net instead of from the disk. It self-installed pretty quickly, though it's a storage hog on the hard drive. Some users believe that the downloaded version is better than the drivers on the disk.
