2 out of 5 stars Not as good as expected   November 25, 2009

I bought this camera less than a week ago after doing a lot of research and being satisfied with prior Canon products. I love the small, lightweight design and the fact that it has a program mode which you can change the ISO setting and White Balance to get a better shot. One feature that I miss from my old Canon A80 is the ability to manually change the shutter speed (great for night photos). There is a "night snapshot" setting, but it didn't perform quite as well. Although the video is not HD quality, it seems to perform well. Contrary to some other models, you can use the zoom while recording video.

My biggest qualm with this camera is photo quality. Though I like the ability to tweek the settings, I also like the option to turn on the camera, point, shoot, and get a great picture. I am very unimpressed with the color quality in auto mode. I've tried pictures indoors and outdoors, but the pictures look very washed out. Compared to my old camera and photos taken in program mode. As it has been cloudy since I've purchased the camera, it's possible that auto mode would perform better in bright light... maybe.

Another concern is the flash. Some of the photos have dark areas, as if the flash didn't light up the object evenly.

Bottom line: If you have time to mess with the settings before each shot, you might get a good picture. If you want a great point and shoot camera, you may want to keep searching.

5 out of 5 stars Best Camera I have ever had.   November 24, 2009

Seriously this is a great digital camera. Takes pictures at night and you can see everything. Has face recognition technology and amazing auto focus. And you look great with it.

Highly recommended. Great buy.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect!   November 23, 2009

Note that I JUST received the camera yesterday, but I have a couple of comments right away: 1. The camera should definitely come with a memory card! 2. The wrist strap is almost impossible to attach; I finally threaded a piece of dental floss through to attach to the strap and pull it through...very slow & frustrating. This is important to me since I was caught in a "sneaker wave" on the Oregon coast, & dropped my camera (no wristband) in the saltwater which completely fried/drowned it. I wasn't completely submerged so a wrist strap would have helped. However, at thi preiminary stage, I love the camera's huge LED screen and the ease of use: it almost isn't necessary to read the short "How to Use" piece. I've yet to look at the CD plus I haven't printed any pictures yet. Will write another review in the future as I rely on Amazon customer reviews!

4 out of 5 stars Decent little camera for the price   November 23, 2009

This is a great little camera for the price. The small size is sometimes a little hard with my big hands, but the picture quality and the options on the camera have been excellent.

2 out of 5 stars No printed manual is a real negative to buying the SD1200   November 22, 2009
Serious Work

I have the SD1100 and love it. My daughter needed a new camera and I bought one for her ... but it was the SD1200 model. She hates having to constantly refer to the CD manual instead of a printed paper manual like I have on the SD1100 especially when away without the damn CD. Perhaps once she's experienced all the problems you have learning a new camera she'll be OK but right now without a paper manual she could flip through to find what she needs to know, it's a real negative to buying this model in my opinion. She was just over the other night and asked to borrow my printed manual even though the camera is somewhat different (hope I get it back).
