To take an accurate reading, first position the green marker directly over the artery on the inside of your arm. |
Next, place your arm on a table so the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart. | Instructions for Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitors There are several easy steps to taking your blood pressure with this monitor. First of all, avoid eating, smoking, and exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking a measurement. Remove tight-fitting clothing from your upper arm, and sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slide your left arm through the cuff and position the cuff approximately 0.5-inches above the elbow. On the cuff you'll notice a green marker; position this marker directly over the artery on the inside of your arm. Next, secure the cuff with the Velcro material. The cuff should make direct contact with your skin, but you should be able to easily fit your index finger between the cuff and your arm. Place your arm on a table so that the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart. Rest comfortably in a relaxed environment for at least 15 minutes prior to taking your blood pressure measurement. Once you feel relaxed, simply press the start button and remain still. The cuff will begin to inflate and numbers will appear on the display as the heart symbol flashes. When the measurement is complete, the cuff will deflate, and your blood pressure and pulse rate will display on the screen. If you need to stop the measurement at any time, simply press the on/off button and the monitor will immediately deflate. And remember, always consult your physician for specific information about your blood pressure. What is IntelliSense? The IntelliSense monitor inflates the cuff to the ideal level with each use -- you never have to make any adjustments to select an inflation level. This is especially convenient for hypertensive users and for people with certain arrhythmia or heart disorders because their blood pressure is so likely to fluctuate. The biggest advantage of using the IntelliSense technology is a personalized inflation every time for maximum comfort. The Importance of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring Doctors, diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals all recommend home blood pressure monitoring for various reasons. Home monitoring provides your healthcare professionals with better information to understand and manage your high blood pressure. Many types of hypertension can only be detected by monitoring your blood pressure at home, including: - White-Coat Hypertension: blood pressure reading is high in your doctor's office but lower at home
- Masked Hypertension: blood pressure reading is low in doctor's office but higher at home
- Morning Hypertension: blood pressure reading is higher in the morning
Additionally, many factors can affect your blood pressure, including physical exertion, emotional fluctuations, medications, and stress. So having your blood pressure monitored at a pharmacy with an in-store device after you've been shopping or walking around might not provide you with the most accurate measurement. Monitoring your blood pressure at home allows you achieve a relaxed state more easily, and it gives you the flexibility to take your measurements at various times during the day. By keeping track of your home blood pressure readings, you can provide your healthcare professional with a log of your measurements over time. This can help them evaluate the effectiveness or need for medication. The IntelliSense Monitor inflates the cuff to the ideal level with each use. No adjustments are required by the user to select an inflation level. This is especially convenient for hypertensive users and for people with certain arrhythmia or heart disorders, because their blood pressure is more likely to fluctuate. The advantage is fast personalized inflation for maximum comfort. What is a ComFit cuff? The patented pre-formed cuff expands to fit regular and large arms comfortably and easily. How is an Irregular Heartbeat Shown? This advanced monitor can detect irregular heartbeats while your blood pressure is being measured. If an irregular heartbeat is detected, an accurate blood pressure reading is displayed along with the irregular heartbeat symbol. What is Morning Hypertension? The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends you take blood pressure readings in the early morning and evening. With the touch of a button you can review an eight week history of your morning and evening weekly blood pressure averages.

Inconsistent readings November 21, 2009 Ben J I do not recommend. Cuff is clumsy and awkward to use compared to other Omron cuffs. Readings are inconsistent.
Easy and accurate, but could use better control interface November 21, 2009 John H. Henderson (Las Cruces, NM, USA) Four months after a move across country at my first and second visits to my new physician, my systolic blood pressure was reading 30 mm higher than my frequent normal readings before the move. The physician placed me on medication for hypertension. I was quite perplexed that my blood pressure (BP) could increase that much over such a short period at time. At a follow-up visit with the nurse to check BP, it was down a bit from before, but still high. After telling her that I hated sphygmomanometers over almost any other medical instrument, she suggested I get my own to monitor at home, and invited me to bring it into the office to compare against their professional machine.
I see two reasons to get your own blood pressure monitor. First, to get more accurate readings in the comfort of your own home instead of the hustle and bustle of the medical office. Second, if you're like me and HATE the feeling of these things, it'll accustom yourself to the experience and hopefully reduce your anxiety at the sight of a blood pressure cuff in the future.
I quickly did some research and ordered the Omron HEM-780. One thing to be sure to check carefully when selecting a monitor is the included cuff size. My arms aren't fat, and aren't super muscular, either, but measured 15" around. The less expensive Omron models only fit up to a 13" arm. The most basic (i.e., least expensive) Omron model that comes with the 17" cuff is the 711DLX. On the day I ordered, the HEM-780 was only $7 more (today, it is only $1 more!). I may never use the morning and evening averaging functions that the 780 adds over the 711, but who knows? For a few dollars more, I ordered the more upscale model.
This unit has been fairly easy to use. Just ensure that the blue stripe is lined up over you arteries as instructed, and be sure the cuff is not too loose when you put it on (a bit challenging single-handed). But just as important, this unit is accurate. After using for a week, I took it back to the nurse and compared against their professional machine. It was only a couple of mm off. The nurse was amazed and exclaimed that this was best agreement she'd seen between a home monitor and the office monitor. She said she'd been seeing a lot of the Omrons lately, and said that she now knew a brand to recommend to patients.
My only criticisms are with the control interface. Like many devices that try to be simple by reducing the number of buttons, it has too few to be intuitive, and they may be poorly labelled. The monitor has two modes - a single measurement mode, and a mode (TruRead) in which three consecutive measurements are taken and averaged to provide a better result. Changing between the two requires entering the set-up mode that is used to change the date and time. You may want to use it primarily in the TruRead mode for accuracy, but at some time when pressed for time, might want to quickly put it into single-read mode, and this method is a little unwieldy. There is a switch for user A or B, which allows the unit to store the results in memory separately for two users. In addition, there is a guest mode that does not store the results. You enter this mode by holding down the start button until both the A and B icons extinguish. The owner is likely to forget how to do this, and not knowing this is even more likely for a guest user. In the TruRead mode, I wish the monitor would display the results of the intermediate measurements. You can see them while reviewing the measurements in memory later, but not while the measurements are being taken. My only other nitpick as that the memory feature only allows you to step through the memory in one direction - from the most recent, back in time. Being able to step forward would be useful. However, if you primarily use it in a single mode, once it it set up, it's as easy as putting on the cuff and hitting the start button.
By the way, my readings at home have been very consistent and in the normal range. I showed that my anxiety and blood pressure increased as I headed to the physician's office on my last few visits. And it's not surprising. The manual with the HEM-780 lists several conditions that should be met to get a good BP reading, and almost none are met when I rush to the medical complex after work for an appointment. (And it probably doesn't help that I'd been briskly climbing the stairs to the third floor office, either.)
Now, I only wonder how long the batteries (4 AA's, and included) will last. The unit comes with an A/C adapter, but I haven't used in a place where it's convenient to plug in.
An upper arm BP device. November 21, 2009 Berntzen Sven-erik (Cape Cod, MA, USA) This type of BP meter (upper arm meter) was recommended by my doctor to be the most accurate one. So I bought a new HEM-780 BP meter from Amazon and to check the doctor's statement I brought my new HEM-780 BP meter to doctor's office checking my BP parallel to his checking with his professional mercury BP meter device. The readings were very close and I was pleased to have found a reliable BP meter finally.
MAYBE NOT AS ACCURATE November 20, 2009 Min Sun Yee (Medina, WA USA) I had written an earlier review with 5 starts anticipating that the H Model 780 would be just as good as my older Model 739.
So far, I have found this not to be true.
In the past years, I had taken the older 739 with me to various doctors' and specialists' offices to compare BP readings, and the readings were very close matches. These were matched at two specialists offices (urology and primary care) at the University of Washington Medical Center as recently as two months ago.
So, I was very surprised to see that my BP's had jumped up about 10 to 15 points on both the systolic and the diastolic. So, now I track my BP numbers as both "old machine readings" and "new machine readings." The results are quite different.
Also, in anticipation of the 780, I read praise here about the ease of the cuff use. I have found it quite the reverse. Far more difficult, and even had to telephone the Omrom help line to find out what I was doing wrong: I was not cuffing tight enough. So, I was told to "hold" the cuff down with my chin, while I cinched the velcro strap tighter and leave only a "one finger gap" between the cuff and my arm. This is far more difficult to do than with the older 739 cuff.
I have several other Omron products: the pedometer, the wrist BP reader, and I'm quite happy with them, but I have not yet figured out "what gives" with the new 780. I am 71, and have been taking my own BP and blood glucose readings for 20 years.
Min Yee, retired, former vp Microsoft, former correspondent Newsweek, and author with a "Min S. Yee page" on Amazon. now age 71.
Too many error messages. November 19, 2009 56 Telecaster (Nevada) My only concern with this unit is the number of error messages
I get while trying to use it. The main error is in getting it to
start. After disconnecting and reconnecting a few times it will
work. I've tried following all of the instructions, but still get
to many error messages to be able to rate it higher.
