Product Description Marpac Sound Screen & SleepMate 980 combines American ingenuity and craftsmanship to create a lightweight, yet durable appliance capable of many years of reliable service. Marpac sound conditioners create a consistent, smooth sound of rushing air. The tone and volume of the sound are controlled by simply rotating the "cap" and "collar" of the housing. This "white noise" sound effectively masks unwanted noises and creates a sense of calm, making it easier to concentrate, relax and/or sleep. These sound conditioners are recommended for restless sleepers, shift workers, infants, children, students, apartment dwellers, office workers (for confidentiality) and many others. The dual speed 980 is made of durable plastic housing suitable for travel or use in the home or office.

replaced a rattle trap fan November 22, 2009 S. Stephens (texas) My Marpac replaced a fan that was gradually falling apart. The Marpac looks better and sounds better. My first choice would have been a sound machine I purchased years ago from the Museum of Modern Art, but that machine faded away and I haven't been able to find another like it. Now, after having my Marpac for several weeks, I'm not so sure I wouldn't choose it over the MOMA machine.
Slept like a rock November 22, 2009 T. Thomas I have used a fan for this purpose for years. The bad thing is they get dirty, old, start to squeak, and in the winter months the air just makes it colder! I am 7.5 months pregnant so any and everything kept me from a good night's sleep especially when my fan started to have the slightest squeak. So, three nights ago my FABULOUS husband bought this for me and I have never slept so well. I would not give it up for a fan again!!
good November 21, 2009 Michael J. Hudson I enjoy having a little white noise in my room because I sometimes work the overnights. Other sound machines break too easily and dont last long. This is very durable and a nice sound. It has two levels and both are a little too loud for my small room but I put a small towel over it and the level is perfect.
Very Pleased November 17, 2009 K. Hauser (WA) In the past I've typically used a medium size fan to create white noise so I could sleep better (I'm a very light sleeper) My wife doesn't really like the air circulation so I looked into a sound machine. After research and reading reviews I purchased the Marpac Sleepmate. Although I feel it's overpriced for such a basic gadget, it works very well. On the low setting it cancels out nearly all peripheral noise...the high setting blocks it all out.
I read a few reviews saying that it did not create enough white noise (in terms of volume) Unless you live next to a train station this will work perfect...by the way, I live 300 yards from a freeway and sleep with the window a little open...this does the trick.
Loud but works November 17, 2009 Chase (Brooklyn, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I would not order this product again or recommend it to a friend. It is much louder than I expected, even on the quietest setting. My husband says it sounds like living inside a wind-tunnel. Not a compliment. It definitely covers many external noises but then again, being super loud that is not surprising. We have to crank the TV all the way up to hear over it. This machine will end up at the Salvation Army - we are still searching for a replacement.
