plastic arm pit supports didn't last a month November 20, 2009 kwhip (Ligonier, PA) The title says it all. I sit at a desk all day and do not consider that I abused them in any way. Within a month both plastic arm pit supports broke. No matter how I tried to tape them, it was futile to try to repair them.
Great crutches for the price, cushion a bit skimpy July 11, 2009 Senor Zoidbergo (Washington D.C.) I couldn't believe how cheap these crutches were when I saw them for sale on Amazon. However, I was sold after reading the solid reviews posted here.
I'm 6'1", and was disappointed to find that most local drugstores, e.g. CVS, did not carry crutches in stock, and in particular, did not carry crutches for those of taller stature (typically, the standard crutch is for those 5'10" and shorter).
When the Duro-Meds arrived, I was a bit skeptical, since they were so lightweight. But I was pleasantly surprised at their quality construction. Maybe I'm a bit out of touch with crutch technology, but the push-button adjustment combined with height metric (which helps determine how much to adjust the crutch according to your height) is ingenious! Well, ok, I used to use these wooden crutches with absolutely no height adjustment aids.
The only downside of these crutches are that the crutch cushions are a bit on the skimpy side, and the aluminum digging into your armpits really hurts. I suppose you could easily address that by putting a towel underneath.
A great price for some quality crutches!
Typical crutches July 9, 2009 Lynnette James (MD) Since my doctor gave me these, it figures he'd give me ones typical of the old-fashioned type. I broke my ahkle a week ago and it's been very difficult getting around in my townhouse, where I broke my ankle in the first place. Sure they're not that heavy, but I see why he gave me these---they're not very expensive. My armpits aren't in pain from them, but then again I don't travel great distances in them. With all the technologies out there, you'd think he would have given me something better and that will help provide shock support. I'm going to try the folding Millenia crutches next. I like there's shock support.
These are great if you just want basic crutches. But face it folks---basic crutches are awful on your hands and arms. Get something better please. Your aching muscles will thank you.
Very disappointed May 5, 2009 KH (Florida) I know you get what you pay for, but I was thinking these crutches were like the standard aluminum crutches I was replacing. Wrong! First, when I unwrapped the package the smell of the CHEAP rubber on the underarm part about knocked me over. Its a strong chemical smell and mothballs combined! The underarm and hand grip covers are just that, COVERS. There is no padding whatsoever. Now I know the true definition of cheap crutches. These! Would return them but would cost more to package and send them than they are worth. I can't get them in the garbage soon enough.
Don't be scared by the price! July 17, 2008 M. Filer (Alexandria, Virginia, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
These are actually good crutches, they are similar to what you would get if you purchased a standard pair from the hospital, I know because I've had both.
Like the other reviewers I was pretty worried about the cheap price tag but I was determined not to get gouged by the hospital again.
The tall set adjusts from 5'10" up to 6'6". I'm 6'5" and have adjusted them down to 6'3" to keep myself from leaning on the armpit rests so much when moving.
These are a great buy if you need crutches.
If you're a heavier individual and lean on the armpits while moving you may want to add some padding as the foam is not very thick.
For my money I am really happy with these crutches, they're sturdy and exactly what I expected.
