DIY Barber Kit November 19, 2009 Raul G. (USA) I ordered this trimmer mainly because I'm Spanish and my thick mop of hair tends to grow quickly. I like my hair neat and trim and going to the barber every 2 weeks is expensive and time consuming.
I'm no expert at cutting hair I'll admit - especially my own. But my intentions were to simply keep the side of my hair and around my ears and neck in control until my regular barber visit. The Philips Norelco QC5170 is perfect for the job I had in mind and has performed flawlessly so far.
So I'll start with what I like. The QC5170 is very lightweight which is helpful in preventing hand/wrist fatigue. The head of the unit can articulate 90 degrees in either direction for hard to reach areas. The blades are supposedly self-sharpening and don't require oil or a lot of user attention. The unit also comes with a built-in rechargeable battery and charging cable. Not having to fumble around with a cord is a fantastic feature and makes clipping your own hair much easier!
There are 2 reasons why I didn't give this unit a 5-star rating. First, the unit doesn't come with a case. That means all the attachments and cord are sitting in a bathroom drawer and unorganized. Second, I really wish this unit had a built-in vacuum. I've been using this unit for about the last 2 months and recently borrowed a friends Philiphs Noreclo with a built-in vacuum and it was great not creating a huge mess every time I cut my hair.
Overall though it's a very nice clipper for the price. Recommended.
This thing is great October 22, 2009 Timothy Murray This clipper works great, it's very easy to use. I believe it has paid for itself already. No more going to the barber.
kind of looks intimidating, but very easy to use October 15, 2009 M. Chunta easy to use, light weight, only have to go over your hair once and it cuts everything without having to do multiple passes
Practical hair clipper for self-cut, especially for summer October 15, 2009 almosthappy (San Diego, CA, California) Admittedly, I was a little nervous trying out this product for the first time. After all, it is not natural for one to give himself a own hair cut, is it? At least in my world, haircut is one of those things - like having your tonsil removed - that you find a professional to do it. But it was summer, it was hot, my somewhat long hair was bugging me, and the weather was too hot for putting hair gel on my head every morning, so I figured what the hell. If it didn't work out, I will get my head shaved or something. Pleasantly, the experience was much easier than a DIY tonsil removal. For of all, the cordless nature of the hair clipper really added a layer of comfort and confidence. The pivoted, rotating clip also make trimming sideburns easy. I tried to think of it as a hair brush, and used it as such. Shockingly, at the end, I had a decent summer haircut. Recommended only for very short haircuts.
QC5170 vs Remington Short Cut October 12, 2009 D. Goolsby (Sacramento, CA United States) I had bought the Remington first, mainly because the QC5170 hadn't come out yet, and the Short Cut seemed like a neater product. And that's about the only place I can grade the Remington higher, it truely feels like a comb in your hand. But what ultimately made me try out the QC5170 was that the Short Cut broke quickly. After a few uses, it doesn't turn on, I think it's the power button. I'll send it in to be fixed/repaired eventually, but I decided to go ahead with trying the QC5170, because in the long run it pays for itself after a couple of cuts anyway.
So while the QC5170 doesn't feel as good in the hand, it's not awkward, and the swivel head comes in handy around the ears. You get 10 length settings vs the 6 (including balding comb) on the Short Cut, and I found the QC5170 did a better job overall with cutting. The battery charges in half the time as the Remington (though to me in the grand scheme of things, 16 hrs vs 8 still means it's not a quick charge, so it'll be plugged in for a while), and in the end I'm a Norelco fan. Now I have 3 Norelco electric shavers, and the power bricks are getting confusing. Time to label them, heh. Now I just need a Norelco ear/nose trimmer, and I'll be set.
