5 out of 5 stars great weight management tool   November 26, 2009

I've been using the GoWear Fit device for several months now. It has worked great for me and is very motivational, especially when paired with the optional readout. I can see if I'm low on activity or daily steps taken and adjust accordingly. The measurements seem accurate - compares well with the numbers I get using a heart rate monitor. One benefit I didn't expect was the sleep analyzer - I love seeing how much sleep I've gotten, but more importantly how restful it was, and did I wake up frequently during the night. I was also able to see how exercise has improved the quality of my sleep. BodyMedia just introduced a new version of the website that I like a lot - now you can just enter your daily calories ([...]). I had never used the calorie tracker much, but when I did it worked ok. The biggest thing I discovered in using the device is that my calories burned are about where I thought, so my extra pounds aren't coming from a slow metabolism. The key is managing caloric intake as well as exercise. May sound obvious, but it was a good learning for me and motivated me to overhaul my diet. Overall, I am very happy with the device and the online tracking tool. I especially like that you can use the website to publish and save reports of your progress over time as pdf files.

1 out of 5 stars You are who your shippers are.   November 25, 2009

I received this item 4 days late. Paid for next day shipping. When I received it the outside packaging was ok. Once opened I see the packaging for the Management System and the Watch are both trashed. Both boxes are smashed and taped up. Upon opening the arm band unit was cracked. Both items had been previously opened. Inside directions were bent. Very disappointed to pay so much money and have something sent in this condition.

I would have thought that Amazon would take more pride in their name. This is a very bad representation. I will not purchase another product through Amazon.

2 out of 5 stars Not Accurate at all!   November 22, 2009

I have been using my armband for about a year now. I have found this product to be little more than a glorified Pedometer. The only exercise that this armband tracks is anything with hard impacts, not high impact. It does not track climbing a hill, because one walks slowly up a hill. It does not
track stationary rowing, weight lifting, any kind of strength training. It does not record lifting squatting, pushups, pullups.

I climb a hill that is about a 20% grade for three miles uphill. Even though I am sweating and huffing and puffing, all it seems to track is about half of my footsteps (I've counted and checked against the watch style monitor.) The amount of ergs or energy I'm expending is not really counted.
I also have an incline treadmill trainer. I don't get an accurate count of the exercise or energy I put out on it either.

This is, as it was explained to me by the manufacturer, because certain exercise does not have hard enough impacts (like a stepping while running).
Thus the glorified pedometer analogy. It does record running or walking fairly well.

As it is advertised on the website, it says it will track your activity all day long, even sleep. It does sleep fairly well. Don't buy this thing expecting that you will get any kind of accurate measure of any real work.

For example, one day I transferred about 600 lbs. of wood boards from a shed to my wood shop about 30 yards away, and stacked the wood on high shelves. Worthy enough work to exert some real energy. 60 steps were counted and about 50 calories burned according to the meter.

If the step is not a hard enough impact it doesn't count. This is why it does not record walking uphill. Slow or carfull walking does not excite the 3 way accelerometer

The tech support guy at the manufacturer and I had a long talk about all of these issues. They are aware of these drawbacks and he promised in about a month from when this is written, that they will be coming out with new firmware that will attempt to make the energy temperature/ moisture (sweat) sensors more accurate in their data gathering.

I discusses with him that they should really build a heart monitor into the armband and monitor system, saying that this is the data factor that they would need to really determine what kind of energy you are expending. Especially in other types of exercise that the accelerometers don't catch.
He said that they were working on this very issue and were trying to figure out the best way to achieve this.

I asked him if owners of the current system would receive a scaled down price because the current system does not deliver as promised, and his answer was that "when the new product is developed, that would more than likely be the case"

Anyway, I don't know how GoFit Wear can make any of the claims they do on the website. I do not feel that this expensive product is ready for prime time at this point. Maybe it will be when they include a heart rate monitor.

Until then, I would not consider purchasing this unless all you do is run or walk.

3 out of 5 stars Additional Purchase Required- Buyer Beware!   November 20, 2009

I was shocked to learn that in order to use this product you must pay a website subscription fee otherwise the product is useless. In order to get the tracked calories from the Bodybugg/GoWear device and input your food calories, you must belong to the website. The product comes with a free 3 or 6 month subscription and after that you must pay for it. It is currently priced at $7.00 per month with an annual commitment or $13.00 per month with no long term commitment. The alternative is to purchase an wrist display for at least $80.00 which will only show you the calories you've burned but gives you no way to input your food calories. This product should come with software that you can use on your own computer to track everything. But at the very least, buyers should be informed of the additional purchase required before making a decision to purchase this item.

4 out of 5 stars good device, awful customer service   November 18, 2009

I was thrilled to get this device and I have to say it is pretty cool. However, the customer service is horrible. This is a HUGE issue since you have to purchase a subscription to use the device. Their website states that you can upgrade, change, or cancel your subscription easily. Um....yeah, no. I have been trying to do this for over a week now. They have a few different plans and I was wanting to upgrade. However there is no place on the website to actually do this. I cannot reach them by phone. They do not reply to email. I have put customer tickets in and have gotten very brief and unhelpful replies.

So, bottom line is that while I was going to upgrade I am now considering cancelling due to the poor customer service alone. That's a real shame. Bad business to have so many people unhappy with their service.
